Category 01

Car (PKW)

All car license classes at a glance – Which class do you need for your car, SUV, or trailer combination? Here you will find all important information on requirements and legal regulations.

Car Training Details
Class B (Standard)

Motor vehicles up to 3.5 t Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) with no more than 9 seats. Also with trailers up to 750 kg GVW or trailers over 750 kg GVW, provided the total GVW of the combination does not exceed 3.5 t. (No motorcycles/trikes).

  • Minimum Age
    18 years (17 years for Accompanied Driving BF17).
  • Theory
    12 lessons general + 2 lessons specific material.
    (Reduced to 6+2 lessons if you already hold another license).
  • Special Lessons
    Min. 12 driving hours (5 cross-country, 4 autobahn, 3 night).
  • Exam
    Theory and Practice.

Info: Mandatory training is waived when rewriting a foreign license or for re-granting. All driving duration figures refer to 45-minute units.

BF17 (Accompanied Driving)

The Class B license can be granted for accompanied driving from the age of 17. Training can begin as early as 16 ½ years old.

Requirements for Accompanying Person:
  • Minimum age 30 years.
  • Possession of Class B license for at least 5 years uninterrupted.
  • Maximum 1 point in the Flensburg traffic register.
  • After Exam
    An exam certificate is issued, allowing driving in Germany and Austria with an accompanying person. (Class AM vehicles may be driven without an accompanying person).
  • Card License
    Upon turning 18, the actual card license can be issued upon application.
  • Probation
    Begins immediately upon handing over the exam certificate (at 17).
Class BE (Trailer)

Vehicle combinations consisting of a Class B towing vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer, provided the total GVW of the combination exceeds 4.25t but does not exceed 7t.

  • Requirement
    Prior possession of Class B is mandatory.
  • Minimum Age
    18 years (17 years for Accompanied Driving).
  • Theory
    No theory training required.
  • Special Lessons
    Min. 5 driving hours (3 cross-country, 1 autobahn, 1 night).
  • Exam
    Practical exam only.

B96 (Code Extension)

Class B vehicles with trailers over 750 kg GVW, provided the total GVW of the combination exceeds 3.5t but does not exceed 4.25t.

  • Requirement
    License Class B or BF17. Age: 18 (or 17).
  • Training
    150 minutes theory, 210 minutes practical exercises, 60 minutes driving in traffic.
  • Exam
    No exam required! You receive a training certificate directly for registration.

Motorcycle Training Details
Class A (Unlimited)

Motorcycles without power restrictions and three-wheeled motor vehicles over 15 kW.

1. Direct Access (from 24 years)
  • Theory
    12 lessons basic + 4 lessons specific (Reduced to 6+4 if holding another class).
  • Special Lessons
    12 driving hours (5 cross-country, 4 autobahn, 3 night).
  • Exam
    Theory and Practice.
2. Upgrade from A2 (Held < 2 years)
  • Age & Training
    From 24 years. Theory: 6+4 lessons. Special Lessons: 6 hours (3 cross-country, 2 autobahn, 1 night). Exam: Theory & Practice.
3. Upgrade from A2 (Held > 2 years)
  • Age & Exam
    Possible from 20 years. Practice rides as needed. Practical exam only! No theory training required.
Class A2 (35 kW)

Motorcycles up to 35 kW and max. 0.2 kW/kg power-to-weight ratio.

  • Direct Access (From 18 y.)
    Theory: 12+4 lessons (6+4 with prior license). Special Lessons: 12 hours (5 cross-country, 4 auto, 3 night). Exam: Theory & Practice.
  • Upgrade fr. A1 (< 2 years)
    Age 18. Theory: 6+4. Special Lessons: 6 hours (3 cross-country, 2 auto, 1 night). Exam: Theory & Practice.
  • Upgrade fr. A1 (> 2 years)
    Practice rides as needed. Practical exam only! No theory, no mandatory special lessons.
Class A1 (125cc)

Motorcycles up to 125 cc, 11 kW, and max. 0.1 kW/kg, three-wheeled motor vehicles up to 15 kW.

  • Minimum Age
    16 years.
  • Theory
    12 lessons general + 4 lessons specific.
  • Special Lessons
    12 driving hours (5 cross-country, 4 autobahn, 3 night).
  • Exam
    Theory and Practice.
B196 (Code Extension)

The 125cc extension for car drivers: Ride motorcycles up to 125 cc, 11 kW, and max. 0.1 kW/kg. Important: Valid only in Germany. No simplified upgrade to Class A2 possible!

  • Requirement
    Min. 25 years old + held Class B license for min. 5 years.
  • Training
    4 lessons theory (90 min each) + min. 5 driving hours (90 min each). No special lessons.
  • Exam
    No exam! Neither theory nor practice.
Class AM & Moped
Class AM (Light Scooters)

Up to 50 cc and max. 45 km/h (or 4 kW for electric). Also Trikes/Quads up to 50 cc/350kg.

  • Training
    From 15 years. Theory: 12+2 lessons. No special lessons. Exam: Theory & Practice. (No probationary period!).
Moped Certificate

Moped up to 50 cc and max. 25 km/h.

  • Training
    From 15 years. Theory: 6 lessons. Practice: 90 minutes. Theory exam only!
Truck Training Peters Driving School
Category 03

Truck & Tractor

Truck Training Details
Class C (Truck)

Motor vehicles (excl. motorcycles) over 7.5 t GVW and max. 9 seats. Trailers up to 750 kg GVW are allowed.

  • Minimum Age
    21 years (18 years if training as a professional driver).
  • Theory
    6 lessons basic + 10 lessons specific (Only 4 specific lessons with prior C1).
  • Special Lessons
    Min. 5 cross-country, 2 autobahn, 3 night. (Reduced to 3/1/1 with prior C1).
  • Exam
    Theory and Practice. (Mandatory training waived for rewriting/re-granting).
Class CE (Articulated Truck)

Class C motor vehicles with trailers over 750 kg GVW.

  • Training (Single)
    Age 21 (or 18 for pros). Theory: 6+4 lessons. Special Lessons: 5 cross-country, 2 autobahn, 3 night.
Pro Way: Class C and CE in one course

Do both licenses together to save time in theory and special lessons.

  • Theory (C+CE)
    6 basic + 10 specific C + 4 specific CE.
  • Special Lessons
    Cross-country: 3 solo and 5 in train.
    Autobahn: 1 solo and 2 in train.
    Night: 3 in train.
Class C1 / C1E
  • Class C1
    Trucks over 3.5 t up to 7.5 t. Also with trailer up to 750 kg. From 18 years. Full training (6+6 theory, 3/1/1 special lessons).
  • Class C1E
    C1 + trailer over 750kg (Total combined max 12 t). Also Class B vehicles with large trailer. Practical exam only!
Class L (Tractor)

Agricultural or forestry tractors up to 40 km/h and self-propelled working machines up to 25 km/h.

  • Minimum Age
    16 years. (No probationary period for Class L).
  • Theory
    12 lessons general + 2 lessons specific.
  • Practice
    No practice rides, no special lessons.
  • Exam
    Theory exam only!
